Laser Hair Removal Q & A

LASER HAIR REMOVAL Staten IslandWhat is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is accomplished through directing highly concentrated light into the hair follicle. Pigments in the follicles absorb the light which destroys the hair. Lasers can be used on the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and many other areas. These treatments are beneficial because they can target unwanted hair without damaging the surrounding skin, treat multiple hairs at once, and have predictable, permanent results.

How Can I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

Before a laser hair removal treatment, discuss the procedure with the doctor to ensure you have a full understanding of the procedure. You should make sure to limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis treatments for at least six weeks prior because the laser targets the roots of the hair which are temporarily removed when waxing or plucking. Sun exposure should also be avoided for six weeks prior to and following the treatment as it can make laser hair removal less successful and can increase the likelihood of complications following treatment.

What Should I Expect During Laser Hair Removal?

Prior to the procedure, the hair which will be undergoing the process will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the surface of the skin. The laser equipment will be calibrated to the color, thickness, and location of the hair being treated in addition to the patient’s skin color. Depending on the laser being used, appropriate eye protection will be worn. The patient’s skin will be protected by a cold gel or special cooling device and this will also help the laser penetrate the skin. The laser settings will be tested and if correct the treatment will continue. When the procedure is finished, the patient may receive ice packs, cold water, or anti-inflammatory creams or lotions to reduce any discomfort. Patients will schedule the next treatment for roughly four to six weeks later. He or she will receive treatments until hair no longer grows.
